Flush Mount Lighting Buying Guide

Flush mounts are a versatile and minimal option for lighting the home. Ideal for smaller spaces with lower ceilings or spaces that need to breathe more, flush mounts illuminate the surrounding room while taking up little to no space. Flush mounts often bring a wide, indirect glow to the surrounding room, helping accent the layers of light already present in the room.

Frequently Asked Questions About Flush Mount Ceiling Lights

What is a Flush Mount Ceiling Light?

Flush mount ceiling lights are lighting fixtures that mount directly to the ceiling and lower just below the ceiling, hence the name ‘flush mount.’ This type of fixture is always close to the ceiling, giving plenty of space to the room below while bringing a viable layer of light. Flush mounts are often simple — by virtue of being close to the ceiling, they cannot have many facets or aspects to them, rather being the fixture more functional than form. Although this minimal and strict design may seem at first glance to be a downside, flush mounts can be found in a multitude of styles and materials such as mid-century modern or with gold color, and can still have shades to mute the light from the bulbs within.

Flush Mounts vs Semi-Flush Mounts: What's the Difference?

Flush mounts and semi-flush mounts are often paired together. Where flush mounts stay flush with the ceiling, semi-flush mounts lower slightly on a rod or chain before the shade, adding a little more design while providing the same or greater illumination. Semi-flush mounts can be thought of as an ideal fixture for saving space in the home but with a greater desire for more flair or design in the room. Like flush mounts, semi-flush mounts come in a variety of styles and colors as well.

What is the difference between flush mounted and recessed?

Although they may seem like the same type of fixture, recessed fixtures offer more space than flush and semi-flush mounts. Recessed lighting is entirely installed within the ceiling with the hardware completely out of sight. The only thing visible with recessed lighting is the thin trim directly against the ceiling and any concave body that holds the light bulb. Where flush mounts, although minimal, can still show off a brass trim or body, recessed lighting will be hidden away from the eyes, acting more functional than eye-catching.

Flush Mount Kitchen Lighting

As described above, the main advantage of a flush mount is the ability to light a room while taking up minimal space. For a kitchen, this advantage means the kitchen can breathe more and be shown off. Kitchen flush mounts will bring an even layer of light to tables, islands, bars, and kitchen cabinets without taking up any of the space of pendants or chandeliers.

Flush mounts with wood tones can also be used to match the cabinets or accessories found in the kitchen such as a knife block or cutting board.

Flush Mount Bathroom Lighting

The bathroom is one of the best rooms for flush mount ceiling lighting. Often tighter spaces that require more function than form, the bathroom is also a space that is often damp or moist, requiring a specific type of lighting fixture. The bathroom is also not a place with enough space for a pendant or chandelier, so this is where flush mounts and semi-flush mounts shine particularly well. For wet or damp spaces, make sure to pick a bathroom flush mount that is rated appropriate for the location. For all flush mounts in a bathroom, make sure they are at least damp-rated, which means they can be in the same space as a lot of moisture, but not in direct contact with water. A wet rating will go further, allowing for the fixture to be directly exposed to water such as when installed inside a shower.
